Effective August 1, U.S. SQUASH will have additional resources to promote activity in hardball doubles when Gary Waite, who holds more professional squash titles than any other squash player in history worldwide and was a triple Gold Medalist in the International 1995 Pan American Games, will serve the Association as a consultant in the area of doubles.
Waite’s work, dubbed the Elmaleh Doubles Project, is made possible by a generous gift from The Victor Elmaleh Foundation, which will cover the costs associated this increased activity. Victor Elmaleh, himself a national doubles champion in 1968, partnered with Victor Niederhoffer at the age of 49 and won three straight five-game matches to earn the title.
Waite, the founder of the International Squash Doubles Association nearly a decade ago, is ideally qualified for this role in which he will liaise with the U.S. SQUASH Doubles Committee to develop and support U.S. SQUASH doubles programs to engage junior, collegiate and adult players. He will manage communications collaboratively with the doubles squash community, and assist the Association in improving the management of doubles activity, including integrating programs focused on increasing participation with the men’s and recently formed women’s pro tours.
Waite’s addition to the Association is a reflection of the commitment Victor Elmaleh has for the sport and the organization has for hardball doubles which underscores the recent progress that has been made in doubles at all levels. This development is particularly significant because it will be the first time in the history of U.S. SQUASH that an individual will represent the organization with a sole focus on doubles.
“We are open for business. Please exuse our appearance while we remodel”
